SUMMER SCHOOL
Science and Engineering of Printable Electronics

This 5-day course from leading European experts is for people new to printed electronics, but with a background in science or engineering; or who want a better European perspective on printed electronics; or to explore digital combinations for print media and packaging. The June 13-17 course will be hosted by the Welsh Printing & Coating Centre, Swansea University, UK, one of the leading international competence centres in the field. Subjects include design and applications for all major printing processes, with relevant inks, substrates, curing and characterisation technologies. There will be practical sessions and a visit to new pilot lines. Support from the EU Framework Programme allows low course fees of £450 + VAT for delegates, and £245 + VAT for academics. For more information.
PROJECTS UPDATE

Collaborative cross-industry projects continue to provide unique insights into industry issues and developments. These currently include:

OPTIMIZED PAPER HANDLING & LOGISTICS — BEST PRACTICES
A unique cross-industry collaborative project brings together the entire paper supply chain — from the mill, through transport, storage, handling and press preparation — to establish a common best practice tool and global reference for suppliers, transporters and printers to improve their efficiency. Substrates are the highest single cost for all printing applications and any reduction in their waste and damage improves both economic and environmental impact to give combined Lean and Green benefits. This initiative will collect and share generic best practices for paper handling and logistics for publishing and packaging applications for most print processes (offset, flexo, gravure, digital) using rolls and sheets of paper and board. The guide will include modules on:

1. Paper, Cores, Wrapping & Pallets
2. Damage inspection & diagnosis
3. Warehouse/Paper store
4. Handling equipment
5. Best practice roll & pallet handling
6. Transportation: Rail, Road, Sea, Containers
7. Printer: Paper on to Press

The project was initiated by the Print Process Champion Group and WAN-IFRA with ERA, IDEAlliance and NOPA, along with participating companies across the supply chain. The result will be a free 132-page E-Book financed by participating organisations and companies. The first edition of the guide will be launched at WAN-IFRA Expo in October 2015. More

LEAN & GREEN SUSTAINABLE PRINTING PLANTS
This new best practice guide is being jointly published with IDEP France to provide an overview and international examples of sustainable printing plants. The printer’s building and its associated operating costs are usually (after its payroll) the company’s second highest expense and a major factor in determining its environmental impact. The energy consumed in buildings is about 25-40% of final energy consumption, plus the related carbon footprint. Some printers have re-invented their working environment to improve their overall economic and environmental efficiency — a ‘lean and green’ strategy. It must be recognised that the printing industry is part of an eco system in which climate change, pollution, extreme weather events and resource availability are issues that affect every part of the globe. Nine international case studies have been made of printing companies that have made the transition to sustainable printing sites provide others with their experiences, Case studies Sustainable Printing Plants. The guide gives a generic overview of the main issues for those interested in the subject. The French edition will be launched at Graphitec in Paris on June 10, the English edition will follow.
PRODUCTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

Blanket Wash Cycle Optimisation
These images show a new application of high speed camera monitoring to provide heatset printers with a real time picture of the condition of the printing blanket. The Wash Cycle Optimizer is part of the Procemex Print Platform and it provides continuous imaging of dust and ink build-up in the blanket printing area. This allows the printer to maximise print quality, optimize the time between blanket washes, while minimising waste and risks of web breaks and blanket damage.

Variable Print PDF/VT Best Practice Guide
Designers and users of variable data print (VDP) can increase production speed by following an independent guide to optimize their PDF files. ‘Do PDF/VT Right™: How to make problem-free PDF files for variable data printing’ provides objective information a from design to production. The guide is edited by Martin Bailey, chief technology officer for Global Graphics and an expert on ISO committees for PDF and PDF/VT. The content is completely supplier independent and endorsed by the PODi and Xplor industry associations.

Test Drive A Print Simulator!
Sinapse, a PPC Associate, will make available the use of its simulators for a 3 month cost-free trial to users of this site. The simulator is a diagnostic and training tool that uses custom software packages to interactively practice problem solving techniques off-press. The software includes monitoring and cost analysis that allows training to correlate the effective press utilization against the theoretical cost on a physical press. Trial versions are SHOTS (6 color - Sheetfed) or PACKSIM-flexo (wide web, narrow web or corrugated). You will need to enter PCC in the promotion code field to access the full 3 month trial, and your PC will need to be connected to the internet to use the simulator.

PROJECTS UPDATE

Collaborative cross-industry projects from Print Process Champions members and partners continue to provide unique insights into industry issues and developments. These currently include:

CHAMPION PrintMark Quality Benchmarking
A cost effective and simple continuous improvement tool to monitor and improve print production colour quality. Confidential benchmarking (not press fingerprinting) allows performance comparison and monitoring over time of one or more presses. It provides an independent assessment of copy-to-copy variation and colour change through the run, which if repeated on a regular basis can quantify the impact of process improvement actions. PrintMark is run by the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC) on behalf of the Print Process Champions. The WCPC, an internationally renowned open access centre for printing research and development, is part of Swansea University...More

Ecolabel for Printed Paper — Newspaper Case Study
The Ecolabel logo on Printed Paper Products is a voluntary EU elitist label that conveys it is “recyclable; uses paper with low environmental impact; and emissions of chemicals to air and water of paper production and printing process have been limited.” This project’s seeks to better understand the label, implications of certification procedures, and value to different stakeholders, who can then each make an informed decision on their interest to use the label or not. How does the Ecolabel compare with other environmental labels and actions? This project is organised by Print Process Champions with the Danish Printers Federation, WAN-IFRA, UNIC, Ecograf, Boettcher, Sun Chemical and UPM...More

Lean & Green Workshops in India
e2-Key Performance Indicators
Economic & Environmental Key Performance Indicators (e2-KPIs) is an on-going Print Process Champions (PPC) project to identify, improve and monitor these related efficiency parameters. The goal is to select a limited number of indicators that have the maximum economic and environmental impact on a print site — this overcomes the risk of having too many non-comparable benchmarking indicators. The concept has been developed in Europe by PPC in partnership with ClimateCalc, Vision in Print and ECOGRAF. It is currently being tested in India as an internal and external benchmark within the Grow Green project of WAN-IFRA South Asia...More
